SH1 Pūhoi Valley speed limits consultation

During mid-2017 the NZ Transport Agency and Auckland Transport consulted on proposals to reduce the legal speed limits approaching the State Highway 1, Pūhoi Road intersection.

The speed limit changes were supported by all key stakeholders. A total of 121 submissions were received during the public consultation period, the majority of which were also in support of the changes.

The Transport Agency has set the new speed limits by making a bylaw in accordance with Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2017 and the Land Transport Act 1998. The new speed limits came into effect on 20 December 2017.

The new speed limits are:

  • SH1: An extension of the 80km/h speed limit through Johnstones Hill tunnel, to end 350m north of the Puhoi Road intersection - a reduction from the previous 100km/h speed limit.
  • Puhoi Road - A new speed limit of 80km/h, starting from SH1 and extending 450m up to the 50km/h zone in Puhoi village -  a reduction from the previous 100km/h speed limit.
