The main freight connection between Auckland and Northland is set to be strengthened with work starting on the Puhoi to Warkworth Project.

The Transport Agency and KiwiRail have started work to trial a new approach to safety on rail level crossings.
In August 2015 the NZ Transport Agency introduced a safety check when assessing all high productivity motor vehicle (HPMV) permit applications, including over length and 50MAX.
The Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Dimensions and Mass 2016 will come into effect on 1 February 2017.
