Renewing endorsements

Updated: 17 June 2010

Forklift (F), roller (R), tracks (T) and wheels (W) endorsements expire at the same time as your driver licence, and are automatically renewed when you renew your driver licence. This means you don’t have to make a separate application or pay a separate fee to renew them - provided they’ve not been expired for more than five years. Expiry dates for other driver licence endorsements differ.

Expiry of your D, P, V, I and O endorsements

The expiry dates of dangerous goods (D), passenger (P), vehicle recovery (V), driving instructor (I) and testing officer (O) endorsements may differ from your driver licence expiry. The date they expire will be listed on the back of your photo driver licence.

When to renew your P, V, I and O endorsements

You need to apply to renew these endorsements at least eight weeks before they expire. The NZ Police provide information for these applications, and the process takes around six weeks.

We'll send you a reminder about eight weeks before your endorsement is due to expire. If you've recently changed your address, you can update it through our online Transaction Centre.

When to renew your D endorsement

We'll send you a reminder about eight weeks before your endorsement is due to expire. If you've recently changed your address, you can update it through our online Transaction Centre.

You don't have to wait for a renewal reminder.

You can renew your D, P, V, I and O endorsement at anytime.

Your new endorsement will be valid for one or five years from the expiry date of your current endorsement.

If you renew your endorsement:

  • more than 60 days before it is due to expire, the new endorsement will be valid for one or five years from the date we grant your application.
  • less than 60 days before it is due to expire, the new endorsement will be valid for one or five years from the expiry date of your current endorsement
  • after it has expired, the new endorsement will be valid for one or five years from the date we grant your application.
