Night time closures of Gillies Avenue off-ramp

The NZ Transport Agency advises motorists of an extended night time closure of the SH1 Gillies Avenue southbound off-ramp, from 7pm on Saturday May 30 until 10am the following morning.

The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) advises motorists of an extended night time closure of the SH1 Gillies Avenue southbound off-ramp, from 7pm on Saturday May 30 until 10am the following morning.

The closure is required to prepare for changes to the off-ramp as part of the Newmarket Connection: Viaduct Replacement Project. Work has been scheduled to coincide with low traffic volumes over Queens Birthday Weekend.

Alterations to the off-ramp are anticipated to take up to three months. From next Tuesday June 2, shorter night closures will take place from 9.30pm until 5.30am, allowing the NZTA to keep the off-ramp open during the day. Motorists are generally advised to follow the signposted night time detour route and exit at Market Rd; those heading to Auckland International Airport should exit at the South Eastern Highway.

Auckland City Council’s current strengthening of the Grafton Bridge will also involve some localised motorway closures in the Grafton Gully area at night. The NZTA and the Council are therefore working together to minimise any disruption and urge motorists to drive with caution and allow extra time for journeys to the airport and Auckland Hospital.

With work also well underway on the St Marks on-ramp, the NZTA thanks motorists for their patience as it looks to realise Stage One of the Newmarket Connection project - the early delivery of a new four-lane southbound viaduct immediately to the north-east of the existing structure, in time for the Rugby World Cup 2011.

“This new southbound viaduct will provide increased capacity and safety across the network at a time when Auckland will be welcoming and farewelling thousands of visitors from overseas,” explains Wayne McDonald, the NZ Transport Agency’s Regional Director for Auckland and Northland.
