The NZ Transport Agency advises motorists that northbound lanes of State Highway 1 (SH1) in central Auckland will be closed on Thursday night, March 19, for repairs near the Nelson Street off ramp.

The lanes will be closed between 9.30pm and 5am when traffic volumes are lighter to minimise disruption to drivers. The southbound lanes of the motorway are not affected by the closure The NZTA says the lanes are being closed so that repairs can be made to a bridge expansion joint near the Nelson Street off ramp.

“These works are important to ensure the motorway network is kept in a good and safe condition for all motorists,” said Wayne McDonald the NZTA’s Regional Director for Auckland/Northland.

The northbound lanes will be closed between the Wellesley Street, Symonds Street and Port off ramp – Exit 429 - and the Wellington Street on-ramp. The direct link between SH1 and the westbound lanes of the North Western Motorway [SH16] at Exit 428 is also affected by the closure.

The NZTA says people wanting to travel west on SH16 or north on SH1 can follow a signposted detour through Exit 429 down to Wellesley Street before turning back up Grafton Gully through Spaghetti Junction to rejoin SH1 northbound and SH16 westbound.

"The NZTA will have roadside messages in place to alert motorists to the closure and detour ahead, but they should still plan to give themselves more time for their journey and look at other alternative routes," Mr McDonald said.

Motorists travelling to Vector Arena on Auckland’s waterfront for the Coldplay Concert will not be affected by the closure.

The NZTA thanks motorists for their patience while the repairs are made.

The Exit 429 detour route in detail is:-

  • Exit SH1 at the Wellesley Street off-ramp
  • Turn right at the traffic lights at the end of the off-ramp onto Wellesley Street East
  • Travel 50 metres and turn right back onto the motorway.
  • Motorway signs indicate lanes for SH16 and SH1.
