Construction will begin next week to install a 27 metre-long retaining wall on State Highway 3 just north of Tongaporutu, approx 13kms south of Mokau.

NZ Transport Agency Regional Director Harry Wilson says the retaining wall will stabilise a potential slip area and play a role protecting the important state highway link between New Plymouth and Hamilton.

Mr Wilson says, "There are indications that a slip may occur in this location soon and, because there is no suitable detour, construction of the retaining wall is a high priority."

SH3 will be reduced to one lane through the work site for approximately 160 metres while the works are underway, and temporary traffic signals will be in operation to control traffic. Most of the works will be carried out during normal working hours, between 6am and 6pm.

The works will take approximately three months to complete and minor delays are expected.
