Saturday night closure of SH16 motorway to allow bridge concrete pour

|

The NZ Transport Agency advises motorists that State Highway 16 in Auckland will be closed between Lincoln Road and Westgate from 11pm Saturday, June 9 to 5am Sunday, June 10.

Royal Road Bridge across the motorway will also be closed to vehicles from 7pm to 8am.

The closure is to allow a concrete pour to “stitch” or join up the deck on the new Royal Road bridge, says the Transport Agency’s Senior Manager Project Delivery, Chris Hunt.

“The motorway and bridge will be closed to allow time for the concrete to set with no exposure to vibrations from passing traffic. There will be detours in place, but pedestrians, cyclists and emergency vehicles will be allowed across the bridge,” says Mr Hunt.

The closures will be weather dependent, and could be postponed at short notice.

The old structure was demolished in January after half of the new bridge was completed. Traffic was moved on to the new bridge while the remaining span was built.

The Huruhuru Road bridge, just 1.5km up the motorway, got the same treatment last month.

The Royal Road bridge will include a Copenhagen style on-road cycleway as well as a shared path for cyclists and pedestrians which is raised and separated from the road. The bridge upgrade also includes increased height clearance from the motorway and wider lanes for traffic.

The SH16 Lincoln Road to Westgate project will improve the Northwestern motorway to support the expected growth in the western suburbs and increased traffic using the Western Ring Road.

Benefits include more lanes and dedicated bus lanes to manage traffic and provide more reliable travel times. There are more walking and cycling facilities with the Northwestern cycle way extended to Westgate. The new bridges at Royal Road and Huruhuru Road improve safety and access to the motorway.
