The NZ Transport Agency is pleased to announce it will reopen State Highway 36 at Pyes Pa Road between Tauranga and Rotorua from Monday afternoon for restricted hours.

The reopening of the highway follows the completion of work to secure the rockface in the Mangorewa/Kaharoa Gorge, after a rockfall on 6 August. The road will be open from 4pm to 9am for the next two weeks, but will remain closed during the daytime to allow further important work to be completed.

“We have now completed the necessary work to safely reopen the road to traffic between 4pm and 9am,” says NZTA’s State Highway Manager for Bay of Plenty, Rod James.

“We appreciate the patience and understanding of the public through this period, particularly those regular users who have faced a long diversion.

“We are pleased to have the road open once again, particularly during the morning and evening peak times.

“The safety of drivers and our contractors has been, and continues to be, our top priority.””

Following the two week period, the highway will return to 24 hour operation.

The Mangorewa Gorge Improvements project is still on schedule for completion in February 2010.
