Introduction

Work category 545 provides for activities primarily related to 'below-track' improvements on the rail network that enhance the reliability and capacity of the passenger rail service, enabling better access to housing and employment.

Qualifying activities

Transitional rail infrastructure improvements are activities that improve the reliability and capacity of the corridor to accommodate growth in demand for passenger rail services.

  • Examples of qualifying acitivites

    Examples of qualifying activities include, but may not be limited to:

    • improvement and renewals of rail facilities and operating systems related to tracks, traction equipment or signals required for the operation of passenger rail services
    • double tracking – extensions/duplication related in part to the operation of passenger rail services that improve the reliability and capacity of the corridor
    • rolling stock maintenance for inter-regional rail service trials
    • purchase of rolling stock for inter-regional rail service trials.

Funding assistance rate

The usual funding assistance rate (FAR) is:

  • up to 100% of the total cost for approval.

The Waka Kotahi Board will decide the appropriate FAR case by case.
