Making the road safer

From 2006 to 2016 three people died and 21 were seriously injured on the Waikato Expressway between Bombay and Hampton Downs. Most of these crashes happened when vehicles ran off the road or crossed the centreline.

The Waikato Expressway on State Highway 1 is the main route between Auckland and Hamilton with around 22,000 vehicles using the road each day. Safety features are not consistent along the entire route so we’re making improvements to ensure all parts of the route as safe as they can be.

What we are doing

Between SH2 and Hampton Downs:

  • Adding roadside safety barriers to stop vehicles running off the road.
  • Adding sections of median barrier in some areas to stop head-on collisions.
  • Adding rumble strips to warn drivers who stray out of their lane.

Between Mill Road and the SH2 Interchange:

  • Adding roadside barrier to stop vehicles running of the road.
  • Adding rumble strips to warn drivers who stray out of their lane.

What's happening and when

SH2 to Hampton Downs - completed.

Mill Road and the SH2 Interchange - funding for this stage is yet to be allocated and construction is on hold. It doesn’t mean it won’t proceed – but that its timing will be based against priorities nationally.
