Project information

This project addresses the road’s high crash history. Drivers losing control on bends, crossing the centreline and running off the road are the most common types of crash on the route. Roadside hazards such as trees, power poles, ditches and drop-offs along the corridor mean there’s a high likelihood that drivers who run off the road will suffer severe injury or death.

The project will see side barriers installed in locations where there is a high risk of run-off-road crashes, widened centrelines installed to reduce the risk of head-on crashes and signage and road markings improved. The visibility of the roundabout on the northbound exit off the expressway on SH1 between Orini Road, Taupiri and the Gordonton interchange will also be improved.

Project timeline

Section 1 – between Taupiri and the Ngāruawāhia section of Waikato Expressway completed April 2017

Section 2 – from Taupiri to the Ballard Road intersection completed April 2017

Section 3 – from Ballard Road intersection to Taylor Road (excluding Gordonton Village) to be completed late 2018/early 2019

Benefits

Increased safety on the route, resulting in fewer deaths and serious injuries.
