Making the road safer

SH3 Te Awamutu to Otorohanga is classified as a high-risk rural road. Three people died and 23 were seriously injured on the stretch between 2006 and 2015. Most of the deaths and serious injuries on this road has been caused by head-on collisions or people running off the road and hitting trees, poles or deep ditches.

Safety improvements could include:

  • wide shoulders to give drivers more room to recover if they lose control
  • side safety barriers to stop drivers running off the road
  • rumble strips to give distracted drivers a wake-up call before they cross the centreline or run off the road
  • a wide centreline to reduce head-on collisions
