Speed and infrastructure

Imagine an Aotearoa where everyone can get to where they’re going safely. Where it’s safe to drive to work and home again or visit whānau and friends. Where it’s safe to ride bikes and let tamariki walk to school. Where transport improves our health and wellbeing, creating liveable places for our communities.

Improving our road infrastructure, as well as setting and enforcing safe and appropriate speed limits, are key to achieving Vision Zero, an Aotearoa where no one is killed or seriously injured on our roads.

To achieve this, we have to take a whole of network approach to develop a safe and efficient transport system where decisions about safety infrastructure improvements, setting of safe and appropriate speeds and safety camera changes are made together and in a way that most effectively and efficiently aligns the transport network with a Safe System.

Waka Kotahi and local authorities are making our roads safer through installing safety infrastructure such as median barriers, roundabouts, and raised safety platforms at intersections and pedestrian crossings. We’re also making sure that the speed limits are safe and appropriate for the road and the life around it. And we are preparing to install more safety cameras to encourage people to drive at safe speeds and follow traffic signals.
