Evaluating and monitoring cycle routes and networks is key to meeting the needs of the customers, understanding the type and volumes of users of the facility and tracking usage over time.

The following features can be monitored:

  • cycle throughput (including modal share)
  • physical works programmes
  • cycle crashes
  • satisfaction levels regarding cycle facilities
  • cycle facilities' condition
  • cycle network implementation
  • level of service improvements.

These aspects are described in more detail in the planning section of the CNG.

The national monitoring and reporting requirements for the Urban Cycleways Programme (UCP) projects includes best-practice methodologies for measuring the success of new cycle infrastructure as well as wider network monitoring.
