Making the existing state highway safer for all road users is also a priority. The current state highway will still need to be a safe alternative after the new motorway opens.

One of the best things we can do to prevent people on State Highway 1 Phillips Road (near Sheep World) to Pūhoi from dying or being seriously injured is reducing speed limits to make them safe and right for the road.

In October 2019, we received feedback from the local community, our partners, organisations and road users about how they feel about the current speed limits on this section of the state highway.

We’ve read all the feedback and used these insights along with our technical analysis, and we are now formally consulting on proposed speed limit changes for this road.

We are running the speed review and proposal to toll the new Ara Tūhono – Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway consultations at the same time because we want to ensure that the community can give informed feedback by understanding both proposals in the area.
