Progress assessment against Waka Kotahi regulatory functions

Following the 2019 MartinJenkins review into regulatory failure and its causes Waka Kotahi undertook urgent work to tackle a backlog of unsafe vehicle cases, addressed urgent gaps (e.g. employing more frontline staff to make sure certifying and licensing systems are safe and thorough), and to stabilise the regulatory function.

Waka Kotahi commissioned MartinJenkins in 2021 to review its progress on improving regulatory capability and performance.

MartinJenkins found significant progress has been made since 2019.

The report presents MartinJenkins’ assessment of progress and gives insights to inform the next stage of progress that will inform the refresh of the regulatory strategy Tū ake, tū māia.
