Superstitions often contain a kernel of truth or common sense. Walking under ladders carries a definite risk of something falling on you, for example. Remembering to ‘blow to the left, blow to the right for safe travels’ is a brilliant way of encouraging people to safely cross a railway line.
Transport is a key part of creating great cities, but it needs to be done cleverly. We need to make sure that our public spaces meet the needs of everyone who lives and works within them.
This Road Safety Week we are elevating and celebrating our true safety heroes. These are the unsung New Zealanders working every day behind the scenes to reduce the pain and suffering from road crashes.

The tragedy of lives lost and families torn apart from road crashes has again been thrust into the spotlight in New Zealand, with 17 people killed on our roads over the holiday period. In the year 2021, there were 320 lives lost on the roads – nearly a person every day.
Recently, I was in Hamilton and took the opportunity to meet with Professor Sam Charlton of Waikato University as part of my Future New Zealand, Better Together series.
Since taking on the role of leading Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, I’ve been deeply impressed by the innovation and dedication of our people working to solve the challenges facing our transport sector and the role this plays in wider challenges facing Aotearoa and the world.
