The CCTV coverage on the Auckland Motorway System provides a good overview of the network. However, due to the cameras being sited on 15m poles or gantry structures, it does suffer from occlusion. Furthermore, as CCTV requires connectivity to power and communications, areas outside of the main corridor have limited or no coverage.
The AMA Transportation Technology Team has introduced 5 alternative variants of Mobile CCTV to the NZTA’s FLIR Latitude Video Management system to allow for far greater flexibility and coverage of the wider network including SH2, the Waikato and Auckland Transport’s arterials. 1. The CCTV Trailer – Remotely powered, via solar energy, it has a camera mounted on a 9m mast and is able to be deployed off the motorway where 3/4G cellular connectivity is available. 2. The Incident Response trucks – A PTZ camera mounted on 6m pneumatic pole on TMAs that streams live video back to ATOC for viewing, control and recording. Extra safety devices include park brake interlocks so the vehicle cannot be driven with the pole in a deployed position. 3. The TIM Vehicle – Fixed roof mounted CCTV giving ATOC eyes on what the TIM operators see. Also utilises 3/4G cellular connectivity. 4. The Brief Case camera – Similar to the TIM set up but not dedicated to one vehicle. Can be shared to other vehicles and mounts via strong magnets to the roof or bonnet and plugs into the vehicle’s 12V cigarette lighter socket. 5. Tru-Witness – Turns the first responder’s smart phone into a video capture device which transmits video directly into NZTA’s FLIR Latitude Video Management system for viewing and recording, regardless of the lack of local power or ITS network connectivity. Able to see areas blocked by standard cameras such as under motorway overbridges.
Estimated results and savings
Improved operational outcomes during incident response to clear incidents quickly, as situational awareness improves decision making. It also enables specific traffic studies to be undertaken.
