Centennial Avenue safety improvement project contract let

The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) has let the contract for $1.1 million in safety improvement and the resurfacing work on State Highway 8, Centennial Avenue in Alexandra.

Fulton Hogan Ltd will carry out the work, that includes a new roundabout at the SH8/Clutha Street Intersection, and cycle lanes from the Dunorling/Centennial Avenue roundabout through to the new Clutha Street roundabout.

NZTA Project Manager John Jarvis says this project will increase cyclist and pedestrian safety along the length of the street with the new roundabout improving traffic flows.  Work starts next week on the Golden Block section of the project. This is being completed first to minimise disruption to businesses in the area.

“Most of the work should be finished by early December with the whole job scheduled for completion in early March. Central Otago District Council will also take the opportunity to continue with their water-main upgrades in conjunction with our road works”.

Mr Jarvis said residents, and businesses were told about this project as soon as possible. Those directly affected were visited by the NZTA’s engineering consultants, so they could discuss their concerns. Those living or working in the project area will be regularly updated on progress and advised of possible disruptions well in advance. Every effort will be made to minimise disruptions during the busy summer tourist season.

The NZTA is paying for the safety improvement and resurfacing work.
