Early reminder of five-night closure of Remutaka Hill in January

|

Ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is reminding road users that the Remutaka Hill road will be closed overnight for five consecutive nights, from Sunday night 12 January to Friday morning 17 January between 9pm and 4am each night.

The night-time closure is the second of three blocks of five-night closures planned across 12 months to enable road crews to safely undertake essential maintenance and slip prevention works.

Regional Transport Systems Manager Mark Owen says fully closing the road to traffic ensures that road crews can carry out the work safely and reduces daytime disruption when the road is busier.

“The Remutaka Hill road is a high-use mountain road that requires ongoing maintenance to keep it safe, but it is a very difficult environment to work in. Full closures of the road increase the safety of our crews and help ensure we can deliver higher quality work.

“By closing the road at night, we’ve also reduced the number of daytime disruptions by 95 per cent.”

Access will be available for emergency services throughout the closure.

If people have an urgent need to travel over the hill during the closures, a limited shuttle van service is available and should be booked in advance. Email remutaka@nzta.govt.nz.
