The final section of the 2.9 km additional northbound motorway lane on SH1 between Northcote and Sunnynook will open to traffic later this week following final inspections. The new lane will help ease years of afternoon congestion along this stretch of motorway by increasing the number of northbound lanes from two to three.

The additional lane from the Northcote Road on-ramp to just before the Upper Harbour Highway (Constellation Drive) off-ramp was constructed using part of the existing median to provide extra capacity and safety on the Northern Motorway.

The $9.4m project started in August 2007 and the first 1.1km section from the Tristram Avenue overbridge to Sunnynook underpass opened before the busy Anniversary holiday weekend in January this year. The second 1km stretch, from north of the Wairau overbridge to the Tristram overbridge, opened in June. The final and southern most section to be opened is between Northcote Road on-ramp to just after Wairau Bridge.

As part of the project both overbridges at Tristram Avenue and Wairau Road have been widened and new concrete barriers installed to improve safety.

Despite being located on one of the busiest sections of the Northern Motorway, the project has been completed ahead of time and under budget.
