Feedback sought on Paekākāriki Hill Road trial closures

The NZ Transport Agency, along with the Kāpiti Coast District Council, Porirua City Council and NZ Police, are seeking feedback on the trial closures of Paekākāriki Hill Road that have taken place since November 2018.

To improve safety on the Paekākāriki Hill Road and journey times on State Highway 1, four trial closures of Paekākāriki Hill Road took place on Fridays in November and December 2018, and further Friday closures have been rolling since 18 January 2019.

The Transport Agency Regional Transport Systems Manager Mark Owen says feedback is being sought from motorists who use State Highway 1 near Paekākāriki at peak travel times, and from Paekākāriki Hill Road residents and nearby businesses.

“The results(external link) of the trials have so far shown that closing Paekākāriki Hill Road has successfully reduced safety risks and significantly improved journey times by between three and 25 minutes for nearly half of road users.

“We are considering more permanent options while we continue to monitor the trials, but it’s important to know how the trials are affecting road users and locals. This will help guide us in decisions on longer term future closures.”

The online survey is open until the end of the month and can be found here:
