Hamilton Airport intersection improvements

The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) is about to make it safer for motorists using the intersection of SH3 (Ohaupo Road) and SH21 (Airport Road).

Intersection improvement works will increase visibility for motorists turning right from SH21 onto SH3 (travelling towards Hamilton) by separating the traffic turning left into SH21 from the southbound traffic. By lengthening the dedicated left turn lane and moving it further to the left hand side drivers turning right out of SH21 into SH3 will be able to see past the left turning vehicles and more clearly see the southbound traffic that they have to give way to.

NZTA State Highway Manager Kaye Clark says, “There have been a number of incidents at this intersection where right turning vehicles have pulled out in front of vehicles travelling towards Te Awamutu on SH3 because they were hidden behind vehicles turning left into Airport Road. The new layout will help make it easier for motorists waiting at the intersection to determine when it is safe to turn.”

The improvement works will be completed along with routine resurfacing work that was scheduled for the SH3/21 intersection at this time.

Work is expected to start on Wednesday 26 January and will take up to four weeks to complete.

Minor delays are likely, and motorists using this route to travel to Hamilton Airport are advised to allow an extra 10 minutes for their journey, Mrs Clark said.
