Intersection upgrade underway on SH 1 in Timaru

The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) has started work on a safety upgrade of the Evans Street/Te Weka Street intersection on State Highway 1 (SH 1) in Timaru.

The project involves installing new traffic signals and resurfacing the surrounding road.

NZTA Highways Operations Manager Peter Connors says the work costing $470,000 with ($140,000 Timaru District Council Contribution) is being carried out by Downer and should take nine weeks to complete. While there are no road closures speed restrictions are in place to ensure the safety of those working on the site. Nearby businesses and property owners have been contacted about the work which is not expected to cause them any major disruptions.

Mr Connors says the Agency has worked closely with the Timaru District Council on this project, that will improve safety and traffic flows on what will be the main route serving the new Timaru Aquatic Centre due to open next year. The NZTA appreciates the patience of road users and nearby residents while this important work is being carried out.
