The NZ Transport Agency is advising motorists that the Manawatu Gorge could be closed for around a week after a large slip came down last night following heavy rain.

Motorists can use the Pahiatua Track and the Saddle Road as alternative routes.

“We have a very large slip blocking the gorge and debris is still coming down. Early indications are that the slip could take a week to clear,” said Regional State Highways Manager David McGonigal.

“Our contractors are working in difficult conditions to get the road cleared, and have a challenging task ahead of them.”

“We’re grateful to motorists for their patience and understanding while we work to re-open the road safely as soon as we can.”
