Learn to drive safely with the Drive Summer Series

|

Know someone learning to drive? Help them learn the skills they need to drive safely and pass their tests the first time with the Drive Summer Series - developed as part of the joint Waka Kotahi and ACC Drive Programme, designed to help young people become safe and skilled lifelong drivers.

Summer is a popular time of year for learning to drive, with a combination of school holidays, good weather and access to the family car providing many parents and whanau with the opportunity to help young people learn to drive and get their licence.

Greg Lazzaro, Waka Kotahi General Manager Safety, Health and Environment, says the free drive.govt.nz website and Drive Go app have been specifically developed to help young drivers and their coaches.

“The programme helps young drivers learn the skills they need to pass the learner licence test, with an interactive online road code and  free practice tests, as well as the driving skills they need to be ready for the restricted and full licence tests, from starting out through to advanced driving skills like reverse parallel parking and overtaking.”

Drivers between the ages of 16 and 24 are most at risk on the road and are over-represented in New Zealand’s road crash statistics, and Drive has been developed specifically for this age group.

Drive is designed to help young drivers learn the skills they need to pass the theory and practical driving tests and to develop the right habits for a lifetime of safe driving. We want our young drivers to be safe drivers, and we also want to help take the stress out of getting prepared to sit the licence tests. The Drive website and the free Drive Go app can help do both of those things,” Mr Lazzaro says.

To encourage more learners to get on board with the programme, Waka Kotahi and ACC is currently running the Drive Summer Series, which allows users of the website and app to earn points and entries into prize draws. Users earn points by completing units, chapters and practice tests in the Drive Road Code, and tracking drives on Drive Go.

The Drive Summer Series runs from 7 January until 10 February 2021.
