The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week (12 February 2023).

NOTE: Roadworks are dependent on weather and other factors. If bad weather should strike, work will be postponed to the next suitable night in the works programme.

Wellington, Porirua, Kāpiti, Hutt

State Highway 1

  • SH1 Wellington, Monthly Tunnel Maintenance Night Closures, 9 pm-5.30 am
  • Terrace Tunnel – Monday, 13 February
  • Mt Victoria Tunnel – Tuesday, 14 February
  • Arras Tunnel – Wednesday, 15 February
  • Traffic must use alternative routes

SH1 Basin Reserve, Sussex Street

State Highway 6

SH6 – Rocks Road/Tahunanui Drive, Nelson(external link)

  • Between Tahunanui Beach carpark and Muritai Street, including the Bisley Avenue/Tahunanui traffic lights area
  • Resurfacing works
  • Sunday, 12 February to Tuesday, 21 February
  • Days of work: Sunday to Friday
  • Hours of work: 7 pm to 7 am
  • During works hours there will be lane restrictions, Stop/Go traffic management and 30km temporary speed restrictions
  • Outside work hours, all lanes will be open with 30 km/h speed restrictions in place

SH6 Waller Street, Murchison

  • Maintenance and monitoring of reseal works
  • Potential for loose chip and temporary speed limits

SH6 Dellow’s Bluff, Murchison

  • The road is open to two lanes with a 50 km/h temporary speed limit
  • Rockfall area and underslip works

SH6 Clark Valley

  • Tuesday, 7 February to Wednesday, 15 February.
  • Days of work: Monday to Friday.
  • Hours of work: 6 am – 6p m
  • Daytime: Traffic management: Stop/Go traffic lights, 30km speed restrictions.
  • Outside works hours: 50km speed restrictions due to loose chip and no roadmarking.
  • Road resurfacing works.

State Highway 60

SH60 Bird’s Hill, Golden Bay

  • Road is down to one lane 24/7, Stop/Go traffic lights operating, 30km speed restriction.
  • Road underslip work

SH60 Tākaka Hill(external link)

  • Tuesday 7 February to Tuesday 21 February.  Daytime stop/go traffic control, 6am – 6pm. 
  • Likely to create 15-minute delays for traffic.
  • Sunday 26 February to morning of Friday 17 March. Nighttime closures, five nights a week (Sunday to Thursday nights) between 8pm and 5.30am.   Road open once per night around 1am.  Vehicles travelling over the hill need to be at the Aaron Creek Road closure point at 12.30 am and the Riwaka Valley Road closure point by 1 am.

SH60 Milnthorpe

  • Monday, 13 February to Friday, 10 March. 
  • Days of work: Monday to Friday
  • Hours of work: 6 am – 6 pm. 
  • Daytime: Stop/Go traffic lights, 30km speed restrictions, road down to one lane. 
  • Outside work hours: 50km speed restrictions will be in place and the road open to two lanes.  However, at times after hours, the road may be down to one lane and managed using traffic lights with 30km speed restrictions.  Please travel with care.
  • Road shoulder widening works.

State Highway 65

SH65 Shenandoah

  • Monday to Friday, between 7am and 6pm, the road is down to one lane, Stop/Go traffic lights operating, 30km speed restriction.
  • Outside work hours the road is open to two lanes with no speed restrictions.  Traffic management: shoulder closure only.
  • Road dropout
