Lower North Island/Upper South Island - planned state highway roadworks

The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week (5 March 2023).

NOTE: Roadworks are dependent on weather and other factors. If bad weather should strike, work will be postponed to the next suitable night in the works programme.

Wellington, Porirua, Kāpiti, Hutt

State Highway 1

SH1 Wellington, Cobham Drive at Troy Street roundabout southbound CLOSED(external link)

  • Sunday night, 9 pm-4.30 am for resurfacing
  • Detour via Evans Bay Parade, Rongotai Road and Troy Street roundabout

  • Sunday to Thursday nights, 7 pm-6 am
  • Lane closures in each direction at various locations for surfacing work

State Highway 59

SH59 Linden, north of Transmission Gully Motorway interchange

  • Monday to Friday during the day, 4 am-3 pm
  • Northbound one lane closed for bridge work

SH59 Porirua, near Mungavin interchange

  • Sunday night, 7 pm-5.30 am
  • One lane closed each direction for fence removal

SH59 Mana Esplanade, near Marina View and Grays Road

  • Thursday night, 7 pm-5.30 am
  • Southbound one lane closed for resurfacing work

SH59 Plimmerton roundabout

  • Wednesday night, 7 pm-5.30 am
  • One lane closed each direction for resurfacing work

SH58 Haywards Hill to Pauatahanui

State Highway 2

SH2 North of Dowse Interchange 

  • Sunday to Thursday nights, 7 pm-5.30 am
  • Southbound one lane closed for cycleway project works

SH2 Upper Hutt, north of Topaz Street

  • Wednesday night, 7 pm-5.30 am
  • Stop/go traffic control for chipseal resurfacing
  • Up to two days and nights afterwards -  30km/h speed limit on new chipseal

SH2 Between Carterton and Masterton

  • Northbound and southbound passing lanes closed day/night for safety improvement project works

SH2 North of Featherston, near Boundary Road

  • Tuesday night, 7 pm-6 am
  • Stop/go traffic control for chipseal resurfacing
  • Up to two days and nights afterwards, 30km/h speed limit on new chipseal

SH2 North of Featherston, near Camp Road

  • Thursday night, 7 pm-6 am
  • Stop/go traffic control for chipseal resurfacing
  • Up to two days and nights afterwards, 30km/h speed limit on new chipseal

  • 6 March – 7 March

General warning – Marlborough Grape Harvest(external link)

  • The Marlborough grape harvest will run for the next six weeks, with the peak of the industry’s activity expected around the middle of this month.
  • While the harvest is underway, there will be an increase in the amount of heavy machinery (harvesters and trucks) on Marlborough roads.

State Highway 6

SH6 Waller Street, Murchison

  • Maintenance and monitoring of reseal works
  • Potential for loose chip and temporary speed limits

SH6 Dellow’s Bluff, Murchison

  • From 7 am, Monday, 6 March.
  • Traffic management: 50km speed restrictions.  Road is open to two lanes.
  • Rockfall area

SH6 Foxhill to Spooners Saddle

  • 2 March to 7 March.
  • Resurfacing work
  • Days: Thursday, Friday, Monday, Tuesday
  • Hours of work: 6 am – 6 pm
  • Traffic management: Stop/Go traffic lights, 30km speed restrictions.
  • Outside works hours: 50km speed restrictions due to loose chip and no roadmarkings.

SH6 Southfuels station through to Bird Road, Wakefield

  • 8 March to 13 March.
  • Resurfacing work
  • Days: Wednesday and Thursday
  • Hours of work: 6 am – 6 pm
  • Traffic management: Stop/Go traffic lights, 30km speed restrictions.
  • Outside works hours and from Thursday evening to Monday evening: 50km speed restrictions due to loose chip and no roadmarkings.

SH6 Gowan Valley area

  • 2 March to 10 March.
  • Road surface overlay works
  • Days: Monday to Friday
  • Hours of work: 6 am – 6 pm
  • Traffic management: Stop/Go traffic lights, 30km speed restrictions, road down to one lane.
  • Outside works hours: 30km/hr speed restrictions will remain in place due to uneven surface.  Road open to two lanes.

State Highway 60

SH60 Bird’s Hill, Golden Bay

  • Traffic management: Road is open to two lanes, 50km speed restriction.
  • Project is ongoing, next update 17 March
  • Road underslip work

SH60 Tākaka Hill(external link)

  • Sunday 26 February to morning of Friday 17 March. Night-time closures, five nights a week (Sunday to Thursday nights) between 8 pm and 5.30 am.   Road open once per night around 1am. 
  • Vehicles travelling over the hill need to be at the Aaron Creek Road closure point at 12.30 am and the Riwaka Valley Road closure point by 1 am.

SH60 Riwaka Valley Road area

  • 10 March to 13 March.
  • Resurfacing work
  • Day: Friday
  • Hours of work: 6am – 6pm
  • Traffic management: Stop/Go traffic lights, 30km speed restrictions.
  • Outside works hours and from Friday evening to Monday evening: 50km speed restrictions due to loose chip and no roadmarkings.

SH60 Milnthorpe

  • Monday, 13 February to Friday, 10 March. 
  • Days of work: Monday to Friday
  • Hours of work: 6 am – 6 pm. 
  • Daytime: Stop/Go traffic lights, 30km speed restrictions, road down to one lane. 
  • Outside work hours: 50km speed restrictions will be in place and the road open to two lanes.  However, at times after hours, the road may be down to one lane and managed using traffic lights with 30km speed restrictions.  Please travel with care.
  • Road shoulder widening works.

 State Highway 65

SH65 Shenandoah

  • Monday to Friday, between 7 am and 6 pm, the road is down to one lane, Stop/Go traffic lights operating, 30km speed restriction.
  • Outside work hours the road is open to two lanes with no speed restrictions.  Traffic management: shoulder closure only.
  • Road dropout
