Lower North Island/Upper South Island - planned state highway roadworks

The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week (21 May 2023).

Important information for road users:

South Island:

North Island:

  • Asphalt resurfacing and essential maintenance is being done on State Highway 58 between Pāuatahanui and Paremata on Monday and Tuesday.

NOTE: Roadworks are dependent on weather and other factors. If bad weather should strike, work will be postponed to the next suitable night in the works programme.

State Highway 1

SH1 Wellington, Monthly Tunnel Maintenance Closure

  • Mt Victoria Tunnel - Monday night, 9 pm-5.30 am
  • Use alternative routes

SH1 Vivian Street, near Tory Street and near Cambridge Terrace

  • Sunday to Friday, 7 pm-5.30 am
  • One lane closed for various works

SH1 Wellington Urban Motorway, near Molesworth Street overbridge

  • Sunday to Thursday, 7 pm-5.30 am
  • One lane closed each direction for barrier replacements

SH1 Transmission Gully, Pāuatahanui roundabout to the State Highway 58 interchange(external link)

  • Finishing works 
  • Lane closures - For the first nine nights the westbound lane will be closed. The following nine nights will see the eastbound lane closed.

  • Traffic management: Road is open to two lanes, 50km speed restriction.

  • Thursday, 11 April to Friday, 31 May. Pavement repairs:
  • Days: Monday to Friday, except public holidays
  • Hours of work: 7.30 am – 6 pm
  • Traffic management: Stop/Go traffic lights, 30km speed restrictions.
