Lower North Island/Upper South Island - planned state highway roadworks

The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week (4 December).

Note: Roadworks are dependent on weather and other factors. If bad weather should strike, work will be postponed to the next suitable night in the works programme.

Wellington, Porirua, Kāpiti, Hutt

State Highway 1

SH1 Transmission Gully, surfacing works 

  • Northbound and southbound left lanes only – through to Sunday, 18 December, weather dependent. 
  • Traffic will be slowed to 30kph when passing worksites and may be reduced in places due to loose chip afterwards.
  • As Transmission Gully is a managed motorway, Ventia is responsible for all traffic management, incidents, and maintenance.

SH1 Ngauranga Gorge rockfall safety project

  • Sunday night 4 December – The southbound path from Newlands will close for pedestrians and cyclists and only reopen 9 January 2023. Follow the signposted detour via the northbound path of the Gorge.
  • Monday night 26 December to Monday morning 9 January 2023 - There will be a southbound lane closure day and night from Newlands southbound onramp. The rock scaling and the installation of safety netting on the cliff face will be done during the 2 weeks over Christmas and New Year.

SH1 Near Glenside/Churton Park interchange

  • Wednesday night, 7 pm-5.30 am
  • Northbound one lane closed for road repairs

SH1 North of Tawa interchange

  • Sunday and Monday nights, 7 pm-5.30 am
  • Southbound one lane closed for project works

SH1 Between Peka Peka and North of Ōtaki

  • Altered lane layouts day/night for expressway works

SH1 Ōtaki, near Ōtaki Gorge Road

  • Sunday to Friday nights, 7 pm-5.30 am
  • Stop/go traffic control for expressway works

SH1 Manakau

  • Sunday and Monday nights, 7 pm-5.30 am
  • Stop/go traffic control for various works

SH1 Ohau

  • Tuesday nights, 7 pm-5.30 am
  • Stop/go traffic control for sign installation

State Highway 59

SH59 South of Paremata roundabout, southbound onramp and lane closure

  • Monday to Friday during the day, 9 am-4.30 pm
  • Southbound onramp and one lane closed for barrier installation

SH59 Pukerua Bay

  • Stop/go traffic control fulltime day and night until the Christmas/New Year break, then will resume on Monday 9 January through to Friday 27 January for hillside stabilisation works

SH59 Paekākāriki, near MacKays

  • Thursday and Friday during the day, 9 am-4 pm
  • Stop/go traffic control for service location work

  • Sunday to Friday nights, 7pm-5.30am

  • Northbound and southbound passing lanes closed day/night for safety improvement project works

  • Stop/go traffic control for road repairs with water-cutting machine

  • For three nights between Monday 5 December to Friday 9 December, closed between 6-8 pm.
  • Outside the above hours: traffic lights, one lane, 30km
  • Rockfall and road dropout
