More scaling works on SH3 near PioPio

|

Geotechnical experts will this week continue scaling works on a 52 metre high section of the Mangoataki South Bluff above State Highway 3 (SH3) near PioPio.

The NZ Transport Agency advises there should be no impact on traffic in the area during the works, which start today and will continue through the week.

The Transport Agency's highway manager, Kaye Clark said the specialists have been undertaking detailed inspections of the site following a fatal rockfall earlier this year.

Blasting to clear potentially unstable rocks was performed in April and geotechnical experts have since identified areas where remedial work to stabilise the area is needed before the road can be opened to two lanes again, she said.

“The ongoing scaling work will help stabilise the cliff face while we work through the long term safety solution,” she said.

In the interim this section of road will remain open to a single lane under traffic management. A concrete barrier and fence remains in place to provide protection for road users travelling through the site.
