Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is advising that the northbound lane of State Highway 2 between Napier Airport and Bay View will receive a second coat seal, with work starting on Monday 23 March.
While the work is underway, the northbound lane will be closed to traffic during the day. The southbound passing lane will be used to contraflow all traffic while the northbound lane is closed.
“We always apply a second coat of seal to a new piece of road, between six and 12 months after the first coat. This gives time for the first coat to bed in,” Senior Project Manager Rob Partridge says.
“There has been a lot of work happening on Hawke’s Bay roads in the last few years, which is all about making our roads safer for everyone. However, we know that this can be inconvenient and disruptive so we thank everyone for their patience and understanding, particularly locals.
“Traffic will be flowing at all times and we will do our best to keep disruption to a minimum.”
There will be a temporary speed restriction of 30 kilometres per hour on the section of road directly beside the works starting at the airport end, which will increase to 50 kilometres per hour for the remainder of the road.
During the night, the site will be traffic managed. Vehicles will be directed to travel at 30 kilometres per hour across the new seal each night, which will help bed in the new seal.
Depending on the weather, the work is expected to be complete by midday Saturday 28 March. On Monday 30 March and Tuesday 31 March road markings will be complete and any excess chip will be swept from the road.
The southbound lanes will receive a second coat seal at a later date, likely after winter.
These safety improvements are part of the Transport Agency’s $36 million investment in the Hawke’s Bay Expressway (State Highway 2) which began in early 2017 at Watchman Road.
