New lane markings for SH29A Maungatapu roundabout

Motorists will notice a new layout on State Highway 29A Maungatapu roundabout with line marking changes scheduled to take place next week

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is making minor changes to help improve traffic flow and safety.

On the SH29A Maungatapu roundabout, a new straight-through option to head towards the City will be added to the centre lane for people travelling from Baypark.

Currently motorists can only travel towards the City from the right-hand lane.

Transport Agency Portfolio Manager Darryl Coalter says the straight-through option towards the City causes stacking of vehicles in the right-hand lane which ultimately causes a backlog at the roundabout.

“By giving motorists a second option to go straight-through we aim to improve the operation of the roundabout, making it safer for all users.”

The lanes between the Maungatapu and Hairini roundabouts will also be tweaked to ensure motorists turning left into Welcome Bay Road use the left-hand lane.

“This will help make lane selection clearer for motorists and reduce the number of times they need to merge into other lanes.”

The Transport Agency encourages motorists to take extra care at the roundabout as people adjust to the new layout.

The changes will be completed during one night next week either on 28, 29 or 30 January – depending on weather.

Traffic management will be in place during works – from 8pm to 5am the following day. During this time one lane will be operating, with a temporary 30km/h speed restriction in place.

Plan ahead for a safe, enjoyable journey this summer. Keep up to date with:
