Northwestern on-ramp to close this weekend

|

The NZ Transport Agency advises motorists that Auckland’s Great North Road westbound on-ramp to the Northwestern Motorway (SH16) will be closed from 8pm this Friday 20 March to 5am Monday 23 March.*

The closure is to allow the on-ramp to be moved slightly to the south (or left) to create working space for the motorway to continue to be raised and widened.

Drivers are advised to use alternative routes during the weekend to keep traffic volumes on the Great North Road interchange area to a minimum. Diversions will be signposted to the nearby motorway on-ramps at St Lukes and Patiki Road.

“We are expecting that traffic in the Great North Road area will be heaviest on Saturday afternoon between midday and 4pm so making alternate plans for travel, particularly at these times would be appreciated,” says the Transport Agency’s Acting Auckland and Northland Highway Manager Mieszko Iwaskow.

“We thank motorists for their continued patience as we work to complete the Western Ring Route.”
Bus services will use the St Lukes and Patiki Road on-ramps as alternatives to the Great North Road. City or eastbound drivers using the Great North Interchange or the Northwestern Motorway will not be affected and the northwestern cycleway will remain open throughout the vehicle on-ramp closure.

Should there be wet weather on Friday and Saturday the work will be postponed to the following weekend.

This work is part of the Causeway Upgrade Project, one of six projects either completed or under construction to link the Northwestern (SH16) and Southwestern (SH20) motorways providing a motorway alternative to SH1. The project is raising and widening 4.8km of SH16 and the cycleway, from Great North Road to the Whau River bridge near Te Atatu.

*Update: Monday 16 March 2015 3:47pm

With yesterday’s storm conditions, there has been a delay in completing some of the necessary on-site works for this closure. The closure will still go ahead as planned this weekend from 8pm this Friday 20 March but the on-ramp will now not re-open until 5am Monday 23 March.
