The NZ Transport Agency says repairs to the Orams Road bridge over the SH1 Southern Motorway in Manurewa are almost complete and it is likely to re-open to traffic two weeks ahead of schedule.

The scheduled re-opening is the evening of Tuesday, 10 November, but the Transport Agency says this will be dependent on the weather not affecting the final stages of repair work.

“We are delighted that we are able to deliver the bridge back to the community a lot earlier than we had planned,” said The NZ Transport Agency’s State Highways Manager for Auckland, Tommy Parker.

The bridge was badly damaged when it was hit by the boom arm of a digger being towed on the motorway in September.

Mr Parker said the NZTA was able to return the bridge earlier than planned by extending the work hours for the repair crews.

“Although those changes did cause some night-time disruption for south-bound travellers on the motorway, our priority was getting the bridge repaired for the communities that rely on it,” Mr Parker added.

“We want to thank the local community and motorists for their patience. Without that cooperation, the repairs would have taken longer,” he said.

After the bridge has re-opened there will still be work to be done underneath. The crews will resume normal working hours of 9pm to 5am, Sunday to Thursday.
