Overnight closure of toll road for maintenance

|

The NZ Transport Agency says the Northern Gateway Toll Road on State Highway 1 north of Auckland will be closed to all traffic on the night of Tuesday, 23 April, for maintenance work at the Johnstone's Hill tunnels.

To minimise any disruption to drivers, the toll road will be closed from 11pm until 5 o’clock the next morning when traffic is lightest.  A detour will be in place along the Hibiscus Coast Highway, a free route between the Silverdale interchange on SH1, Orewa and Puhoi.

“The maintenance is necessary to ensure that the two 345 metre-long tunnels are kept in a good and safe condition for all highway users,” says the NZTA’s State Highways Manager for Auckland and Northland, Tommy Parker.

Safety features for the tunnels include 12 extraction fans, almost 1300 lights, two cross passages to move people from one tunnel to another if there is an emergency, a deluge fire suppression system, 14 emergency equipment cabinets, and sensors that measure smoke, light, wind and pollution.  The tunnels are monitored 24 hours a day from the Joint Transport Operations Centre at Takapuna.
