As part of progress on the SH20 Manukau Harbour Crossing project, the NZ Transport Agency will be lifting eight beams into place across one span of the Rimu Road overbridge overnight on Wednesday 17 September.

To complete the installation, all motorway lanes underneath the Rimu Road overbridge on the Southwestern Motorway (SH20) will be closed from 9pm Wednesday 17 September until 5am Thursday 18 September.
The two kilometre stretch of motorway to be closed is between Mahunga Drive off-ramp and Walmsley Road on-ramp southbound and between Coronation Road off-ramp and Rimu Road on-ramp northbound.

Delays are possible so motorists travelling to and from Auckland International Airport are advised to leave an extra 30 minutes for their journey. Advance warning signs will be in place to give early notice of the closure and motorists can listen to radio traffic reports for updates.

“We will be monitoring traffic flows on the motorway and surrounding roads throughout the evening to ensure that traffic flows consistently and that the lanes are reopened well before the early morning peak,” says NZTA acting regional manager Tommy Parker.

Motorists are advised to follow the signposted detours:

  • Heading south to the Airport: Mahunga Drive off-ramp, Walmsley Road to Walmsley Road on-ramp
  • Heading north to Auckland City: Coronation Road off-ramp, Coronation Road to Rimu Road on-ramp

In the event of bad weather or unforeseen circumstances, the closure will be moved to the night of Thursday 18 or Sunday 21 September.

Each 22 metre pre-cast concrete beam will be installed using a 300 tonne crane. After the beams are installed, traffic will be switched onto the new bridge. The next stage of work will dismantle the old bridge piece by piece and then complete the remainder of the new bridge. When the bridge replacement is completed in July 2009, work can then start to construct the new SH20 motorway lanes to the east of the existing motorway. The new Rimu Road overbridge will feature new dedicated cycle lanes in both directions, a widened footpath for pedestrians and new barriers to improve safety.

The NZ Transport Agency thanks motorists for their patience and co-operation while construction takes place. For more information on the SH20 Manukau Harbour Crossing project, phone 0800 SH20 MHX (0800 7420 649) or visit www.transit.govt.nz/projects/mhc/(external link)
