Overnight closures of SH2 Remutaka Hill begin in April

|

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is giving motorists an early reminder of upcoming planned overnight closures of State Highway 2 (SH2) over the Remutaka Hill, beginning on Sunday 10 April.

The road will be closed in both directions from 9pm on Sunday 10 April until 4am on Monday 11 April to allow crews to safely complete essential maintenance work on the road.

“The Remutaka Hill road is steep, narrow and winding which makes it a challenging environment to work in. Fully closing the road at night for this work is the safest option for both workers and motorists. It also  significantly reduces the number of required stop/go disruptions at other, busier times and allows crews to undertake better quality maintenance work,” says Waka Kotahi Regional Transport Services Manager Mark Owen.

Motorists are advised to plan their travel outside of the planned closure hours. An escorted vehicle service will be available for shift workers and others with light vehicles who have no other option but to cross the Remutaka Hill during the closure.

Bookings for the service are essential as numbers are limited, given multiple number of work sites across the hill, during this closure. Bookings request should be made by Friday 8 April, and can be sent to customer@capitaljourneys.co.nz

Access will remain available for emergency services at all times throughout the closures.

The work will take place under Covid-19 health and safety protocols to keep workers and road users safe. While the dates listed below are fixed, bad weather or Covid-19 restrictions may cause works to be cancelled, possibly at short notice.

Planned closures up to June 2022:

  • 1 night, 9pm Sunday 10 April to 4am Monday 11 April
  • 5 nights, 9pm to 4am, Sunday 15 May to Friday 20 May
  • 5 nights, 9pm to 4am, Sunday 22 May to Friday 27 May
  • 1 night, 9pm Sunday 12 June to 4am Monday 13 June
