Plan ahead for Great North Road motorway on-ramp closure

Improvements to the way motorists access the Northwestern Motorway citybound at Great North Road are due to be completed this weekend.

The NZ Transport Agency is advising motorists the east bound, loop road on-ramp will be closed from 10pm Friday 29 April to 5am Monday 2 May, to allow the work to be carried out.

The on-ramp is being realigned to improve safety and give customers a smoother entry onto the motorway.

Great North Road is one of the busiest interchanges on the Auckland motorway network and the weekend closure will affect a significant number of customers.

The Transport Agency is encouraging motorists to plan ahead to avoid delays.

'We are carrying out this work during the weekend when traffic volumes are lower to reduce the disruption, however this is a very busy motorway on-ramp with more than 1200 vehicles using it every hour during an average Saturday,' says Brett Gliddon the Transport Agency’s Auckland Highway Manager.

'The impact of the closure is likely to affect traffic from Rosebank Road through to Western Springs, and that’s why we encourage drivers to use alternative routes and allow plenty of time for their travel.'

'We would like to thank people for their continued patience and support as we work to complete the upgrade to this part of SH16.'

The alternative routes include Rosebank Road or Western Springs/St Lukes Interchanges or entering the motorway on the Great North Road westbound on-ramp and doubling back at Rosebank Road.

The changes at Great North Road are part of the Transport Agency’s upgrade of State Highway 16 and the Waterview Connection project. They make up the Western Ring Route, one of the government’s seven Roads of National Significance to help promote economic growth.
