Protest affecting State Highway 1, Johnsonville

|

Commuters heading into Wellington’s CBD can expect delays this morning.

Update 9.15 am

State Highway 1 is now open between Tawa and Johnsonville. The southbound lane remains blocked before the Johnsonville off-ramp.

Traffic is queued back to the Linden interchange, and delays will continue until congestion eases. Drivers heading into Wellington must factor this into their travel plans.

Update 8.45 am

State Highway 1’s southbound lanes are now closed to traffic between the Tawa interchange and the Johnsonville off-ramp.

Police are onsite and controlling the incident.

The closure means there is no direct route for southbound drivers to get to Wellington’s CBD when travelling from Porirua.

There will be significant travel delays and disruption as available alternative routes will be either via local roads (Tawa to Johnsonville) or State Highway 58, Haywards, and State Highway 2, Hutt Valley.

7.46am

Because of protest action, the highways left southbound lane is blocked before the Johnsonville off-ramp.

Drivers heading into the city are asked to use the right-hand lane.

Because this incident coincides with morning peak traffic, significant travel delays are possible.
