The NZ Transport Agency advises motorists that the State Highway 2 Rimutaka Hill Road will be closed between approximately 6am and 8am tomorrow morning for slip prevention work.

Regional performance manager Mark Owen says recent bad weather has caused a number of slips on the Rimutaka Hill road caused by the hillside becoming saturated, resulting in loose rock. He says contractors will close the road tomorrow morning to remove residual loose material from one site to prevent the likelihood of future disruption and safety issues arising from slips.

Mr Owen says the road will be closed from around 6am to 8am on Sunday morning to enable debris to be safety be taken down to road level. The road will then be opened to one lane with stop-go traffic operation to allow the he debris to be loaded onto trucks and carted away.

Mr Owen says it is anticipated that work will be completed by midday, subject to conditions.

"While we appreciate that this closure is an inconvenience, it will help prevent future unscheduled closures that cause even greater disruption to drivers. We thank the public for their understanding and ask people to plan their day with this closure in mind."

Electronic information signs at either end of the road will announce when the road reopens, and updates can be found at www.nzta.govt.nz(external link).
