Rimutaka Hill Road reopens

The NZ Transport Agency advises motorists that the State Highway 2 Rimutaka Hill Road has reopened.

NZTA Wellington Operations Manager Mark Owen says crews have worked hard all morning to clear snow from the highway, and this has enabled the NZTA to reopen the road earlier than expected.

"Light snow is still falling and safety remains paramount, so we'll be keeping a very close eye on conditions, and we urge motorists to drive with care and to the conditions."

Mr Owen says crews will continue working on the road throughout the day, and motorists should allow time for some delays.

He says this morning's cleanup area extended all the way to Featherston, and crews had done an admirable job getting the road open before midday, especially given the wide area of snow coverage.

"We're grateful to motorists for their patience during this unseasonable blast - it's caused a lot of disruption and people have been very understanding."
