People who drive through Beaumont on SH8 will notice the traffic signals shifting closer to the Beaumont Hotel from early next week, 22 August.
A temporary, single lane road has been built to enable construction of the highway approaches to the new bridge on the highway between Dunedin and Central Otago over the Clutha River. This road opened at the end of June.
From Monday, 22 August onwards, traffic will start using the section of this temporary road on the west side of the bridge (the hotel side – see map below). This will extend the length of the temporary road to 600 metres. Signals will continue to safely manage vehicle flows 24/7.

“Please be patient, help keep other road users safe, and drive when the traffic signals are green and it’s your turn to go,” says Nicole Felts, Journey Manager for Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.
Delays should average around five minutes but sometimes, depending on work requirements, these may be up to eight minutes, says Miss Felts.
Also from Monday, access to the Beaumont Hotel car park will be off Dee Street only, to enable new bridge approach works to be completed outside the hotel.
The west side temporary road will be in place for around a year and, from October, the eastern section of the single lane will shorten slightly.
