Roadworks on Raumati Straights tonight and reminder about weather forecast

|

The NZ Transport Agency is advising motorists travelling up the Kapiti Coast that they may experience some delays this evening, with the road on the Raumati Straights reduced to one lane in both directions. Raumati Straights is the 2km stretch of State Highway 1 between Mackays Crossing and Poplar Avenue.

An unexpected equipment failure during planned overnight roadworks on Raumati Straights has meant that works could not be completed by the afternoon peak for traffic today.

“We believe there may  some delays however crews are working hard to get it open to two lanes by early evening. However we still wanted to give people information so they could plan ahead,” Mark Owen, Regional Performance Manager, NZ Transport Agency says.

“There will be a single lane operating in each direction running on the two northbound lanes until around 7pm after which time crews hope to have two lanes open northbound tonight,” Mr Owen says.

“Motorists should also be aware of weather forecast with the possibility of significant heavy rain and very strong winds in Wellington, Kapiti and the Wairarapa. Winds up to 140 km are forecasted for the Rimutaka Hill Road and across the Wairarapa. This will create a significant risk for high sided vehicles and motorcyclists, and we advise extra care. Please remember to drive to the conditions, and during severe weather, only travel if necessary.”
