Rockfall safety work south of Kaikōura, between Raramai Tunnels and Peketa

|

To reduce the risk of new rockfall, maintenance work will be completed between the Raramai Tunnels and Peketa, south of Kaikōura, over the next couple of weeks.

This is happening ahead of the installation of the permanent canopy rockfall protection, says Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.

The closures are scheduled across two weeks, Tuesday to Thursday, with Friday also available.

“The road will be closed for periods of 30 minutes while crew work on the rock above the road. The maximum wait time will be about 35 minutes,” says Colin Knaggs, Waka Kotahi NCTIR (North Canterbury Transport Infrastructure Recovery alliance) Manager.

Week 1: Tuesday 9, Wednesday 10, and Thursday 11 June (with Friday 12 June as a contingency day).

Week 2: Tuesday 16, Wednesday 17, and Thursday 18 June (with Friday 19 June as a contingency day).

All closures will take place between 9am and 5pm on each scheduled day.

The longer journey along the east coast

If you are travelling between Picton and Christchurch, please allow at least 5.5 hours for this trip due to this work near Peketa and other worksites across the SH1 corridor due to the Kaikōura earthquake recovery work, says Waka Kotahi.

Currently there are a number of work crews widening the road seal on the north side of Kaikōura, with temporary traffic management and single lane Stop/Go access. Thanks to everyone for being patient.
