Safer exit layout for SH16 westbound drivers at Waterview

There will be a new and safer layout for westbound drivers leaving Auckland’s Northwestern Motorway (State Highway 16) to join Great North Road at Waterview from next Monday (4 April) when an extended exit lane is opened.

Another 215m has been added to the westbound exit lane, which is now approximately 830m long. It will start further east towards St Lukes and there is more separation between it and the adjacent motorway lanes.

“This is one of the busiest interchanges on the Auckland Motorway network and the extension will help keep traffic flowing by giving drivers more room to leave the Northwestern’s main traffic lanes if they want to exit at Great North Road,” says the NZ Transport Agency’s Highway Manager Brett Gliddon.

Great North Road is one of the busiest arterial roads in New Zealand and is used by an average of 55,000 vehicles every day.

The extension to the exit lane is part of the Transport Agency’s Waterview Connection project, New Zealand’s largest and most ambitious roading project.

The project includes construction of a motorway-to-motorway Great North Road Interchange linking the Northwestern and Southwestern motorways, and the redevelopment of the existing interchange beneath it for local traffic.
