Safety improvement works continue on SH1 south of Ātiamuri

|

A reminder that temporary speed restrictions and occasional stop/go traffic management are in place on State Highway 1 (SH1) between Maroa Road and Tram Road, south of Ātiamuri.

The work is the first stage of safety improvements on SH1 between Piarere and Taupō to install flexible median safety barriers and roadside safety barriers.

A 50km/h temporary speed limit is in place through the site at all times and stop/go traffic management with a 30km/h temporary speed limit may also be used at times between 9am and 3pm Monday to Friday.

The temporary speed restrictions are in place throughout the work site for the safety of road users and construction workers. A speed activated warning system is also in place.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency expects that the construction works will be completed by December 2022. In March 2023 contractors will come back to complete the second seal.

As the area is remote with few alternative routes, road users are advised to plan ahead and expect minor delays.

This work is part of the Road to Zero strategy, which underpins the vision Waka Kotahi has of zero deaths and serious injuries on our roads. Road safety barriers help keep vehicles on the road, out of opposing lanes, and protect road users from roadside hazards like power poles and trees.
