Section of SH1 Taupo CLOSED due to a serious crash - NOW OPEN

The NZ Transport Agency advises motorists that State Highway 1 Taupo is CLOSED at the intersection of Heuheu Parade due to a serious crash.

Emergency services are at the scene and motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.  A detour around Lake Taupo is being set up.   


Update: 9 March 2.29pm

State Highway 1 south of Taupo will remain closed for several hours. A detour around Lake Taupo is in place and will add over an hour and a half to your journey. 

If you're heading north of Taupo we're advising motorists to continue on State Highway 32 to Tokoroa. 

Please consider delaying any non-urgent travel.


Update: 9 March 4.15pm

One lane of SH1 is now open. Police are managing traffic through the site and motorists should expect lengthy delays. Consider delaying travel if possible.
