SH2 Melling Intersection improvements

|

From Monday 6 August the New Zealand Transport Agency and Hutt City Council are running a trial on the traffic signal phasing at the Melling intersection on State Highway 2. This may affect your journeys in peak times (approximately 6.45am to 8.30am and 4.30pm to 5.50pm), particularly if you live in Harbour View Road.

  • Drivers leaving Harbour View Road and Tirohanga Road, Lower Hutt, may have to wait slightly longer at the traffic lights during peak times and may not get a green light every phase.
  • Drivers travelling from Harbour View Road to Melling Station will notice a new green left hand turn arrow and road markings at the intersection with State Highway 2, which will enable them to turn left onto the state highway and access the Melling train station car park via a right turn into Block Road.
  • Drivers turning right from State Highway 2 to enter Harbour View Road may have to wait longer at the traffic lights for a green light during the morning (6.45am – 8.30am) and evening peak periods (4.30pm – 5.50pm).

All motorists are urged to take extra care at the intersection and allow more time for journeys.

The aim of the initiative is to test whether the changes improve traffic flows on the State Highway, by improving the overall traffic capacity of the intersection, and subsequently the rate of vehicles passing through it.

Melling is a busy intersection where local traffic and state highway traffic meets, there is also demand from commuters using Melling train station. We want to look at interim measures to make the intersection flow more efficiently, while ensuring improved flow of traffic through this intersection.

Staff will be monitoring the intersection during the trial to ensure there are no safety issues and will review the trial on Friday 10 August.

The NZTA and Hutt City Council thank motorists for their patience.
