SH2 Paeroa to Waihi Karangahake Gorge open to one lane due to a large slip

|

The NZ Transport Agency advises motorists that SH2 Paeroa to Waihi, Karangahake Gorge is now open to one lane under stop/go management.

Contractors are on site clearing the slip which is made up of boulders, some the size of small cars.

Engineers are assessing the stability of the site and are working as hard as they can to get the job done as soon as possible. There is some material that came down yesterday still in place to act as a barrier to allow one lane to operate safely.

What is currently unknown is how much more loose material remains above the slip site, and whether or not more rocks might come down.

Until all assessments have been completed and we are satisfied we can re-open the road safely to two lanes we will continue to operate with one lane under stop/go management into the working week.

We ask motorists to delay their journey and use an alternative route.

Updates will be posted to our website and social media pages.

The NZ Transport Agency wants to thank road users for their understanding and patience.
